Wellbeing is more important now than ever before, and I don’t mean the Goop, $12 turmeric latte, highly consumeristic variety. Real wellness is holistic and rooted in community. COVID-19 is a lesson on interconnectedness. Today the beating of a butterfly’s wings and its impact are obvious across every interrelated system from the economy to healthcare and the environment. We’re all witness to flows of information, energy, and the impact of this virus every day.
Martin Shaw describes this pandemic as an initiation, a rite of passage before the new can arrive. He also reminds us that not all initiations successfully result in wisdom. The shelter in place protests along with the rush to reopen the economy seems to be evidence of this. These behaviors also reveal a fierce desire to return to a normal that no longer exists. In contrast, David Abram observes that “right now, the earthly community of life — the more-than-human collective — is getting a chance to catch its breath without the weight of our incessant industry on its chest,” a sentiment that leaves me exhaling and curious about what might evolve.
